LG’s KU990 touchscreen “Viewty” is a 5 megapixel, HSDPA beauty

Posted in hsdpa, lg (August 21, 2007 at 4:49 am)

It’s out. LG’s newest heartthrob — the KU990 — is official and on the way to the UK (likely with Vodafone) this fall. The German IFA show at the end of the month will mark its coming out party seeing the KU990 dressed up in a 5.1 megapixel shooter with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, image stabilization (likely digital), auto focus, 120fps video, and ISO 800 sensitivity. Sure, the camera is nice and all, but this pup is packing a 3-inch, 240 x 400 touchscreen riding on 3G HSDPA data. Hoozah! With a European launch imminent (sorry, no Stateside details), the wait for the iPhone is suddenly less of a burden, eh?

Toshiba Portege R500 3G upgrade gets FCC approval

Posted in hsdpa (July 21, 2007 at 1:07 am)

The Toshiba Portege R500, a 12.1-inch ultraportable that we’ve been telling you about has just gotten a new 3G add-on cleared for takeoff by our favorite government agency, the FCC. The Core 2 Duo-driven laptop, which just hit the market, has been given the a-ok on an HSDPA module, potentially making this a big deal for people who are in dire need of connectivity options (jet-setting suits, we’re looking at you). In case you’ve forgotten, the ultralight, ultrathin laptop starts at a weight of 1.72 lbs, can utilize a 32GB or 64GB SSD drive, and also has 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth. The “world’s thinnest” laptop is on sale right now starting at $1,999, but no word on when the 3G is coming, or how much it will cost.

NTT DoCoMo tests speedy Super 3G

Posted in hsdpa (July 14, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Filed under:

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, its just Japan’s NTT DoCoMo blowing the rest of the world away with yet more steroid-loaded 3G action, or Super 3G in this case. Blending advanced HSDPA and HSUPA technologies, Super 3G is touted as having downlink speeds as quick as 300Mbps — a fair bit quicker than earlier reports — to your handset. The indoor tests will begin with only one transmitting and receiving antenna, but switch up to the four Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna system that would be used if deployed. Test are expected to wrap up in 2009, so in the interim we’ll all just sit back and cry a little knowing we’ll never see this type of tech on these shores.

Phoebus 3G router converts PCMCIA data card into WiFi

Posted in hsdpa, wifi (June 24, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Yeah, this trick most certainly has a thin layer of dust on it, but there’s just something special about a portable pyramid that turns your average PCMCIA data card into WiFi. The 3G Phoebus MB6000 purportedly plays nice with “most cellular PCMCIA cards on the market today” sans drivers or complicated software installations, which enables plug ‘n play access to your data network regardless of current location. Aside from turning your card into a wireless access point for multiple users to connect to, it also enables wired Ethernet connections and a security suite that will only allow authenticated users to view the network. Such a fine convenience, however, was bound to come at a rather steep price, so you should probably make sure you’ll be spending an awful lot of time surfing on the go before shelling out $299.95.

Compal showcases prototype UMPC running Windows CE

Posted in hsdpa, umpc, bluetooth, wifi (June 15, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Although it’s still proudly donning the proverbial prototype badge, a nifty machine from Compal was spotted at Computex running Windows CE 5.0 in favor of the battery-draining XP or Vista. Simply dubbed the UMD (Ultra Mobile Device), this ultraportable supposedly pulled double duty as a smartphone and even played nice with HSDPA. Internally, it featured a 532MHz Freescale i.MX31 processor, 512MB of NAND Flash memory, 256MB of DDR RAM, a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, trackpad, hot keys, built-in speaker and microphone, a 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera, SIM card slot, and a miniSD slot to hold excess media. Additionally, it boasted USB connectivity, a headphone jack, a meager five-watt power consumption rating that enabled nearly five hours of battery life, and the obligatory media playing and Skype-friendly applications that you would expect on such a multifaceted device. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell whether Compal will come through on bringing this thing to market, but we’re sure there’s a niche that would be all over it should it eventually roll out.

Early review round-up of the Motorola Q9

Posted in hsdpa, moto, motorola (June 3, 2007 at 1:17 am)

Filed under:

We know you like to hear the good stuff first when it comes to reviews — in this case of the Motorola Q9 — so we’ll start there: the Q9’s keyboard is probably the best advocate for “good,” with reviewers from CNET, Phonescoop, and Trusted Reviews all digging its tactility (even if we didn’t). The only site to test battery life was CNET, which discovered an acceptable and now pretty much standard “lasts all day without recharge” ability. The main negative aspect of the phone is its chunkiness, which we noticed in our hands-on. Unfortunately that’s something you’ll have to deal with, along with the lack of WiFi, a slightly small screen, and yet another style of proprietary mini-USB port. Other quirks include a default install of the Opera web browser over Pocket Internet Explorer (to each their own we suppose), an eschewing of MobileOffice in favour of DocumentsToGo, and a strange flash that blinks at random in viewfinder mode. It seems as if Moto made an attempt at the basics and got somewhere, but let themselves down in the details. As always, it’s up to you whether you can put yourself above them.

[Thanks, Thomas]

Cowon Q5 PMP unboxing

Normally our product unboxing posts are reserved for prime American kit from the likes of the biggest manufacturers, but Cowon’s Q5 portable media player with its integrated WiFi and HSDPA definitely deserves the same treatment. Just so you get a sense that the feature packed PMP actually exists and is coming to these shores, check out the product unboxing over at the Cowon forums. Get a load of that 5-inch 800×600 LCD display, check out the included remote and cables, and ogle at all that unintelligible (to us) Korean text. Just to remind you, the Q5 should be dropping sometime this quarter for $499 to $549, depending on whether you opt for the 40GB or 60GB capacity.

Teltonika’s HSDPA USB modem accepts SIM cards and OS X

Posted in hsdpa, europe, uk, england (May 12, 2007 at 1:07 am)

While PCMCIA and ExpressCards certainly fit the bill at times, the convenience of popping any ole SIM card into a USB adapter and hopping on a 3G network can’t be denied. Teltonika’s HSDPA USB modem just so happens to provide such a luxury, as the versatile device supports speeds up to 1.8Mbps via GPRS / EDGE / HSDPA, is entirely USB powered, and provides the ability to “text from your PC” and use VoIP. Furthermore, the TELTUSB3G manages to support both Windows and OS X right out of the box, and the company even allows you to customize the enclosure with colors and logos of your choice if you cough up the required surcharge. Unsurprisingly, you won’t be snagging this one in the US without some importing help from the other side of the pond, but Europeans can grab one right now for around £165.00 ($329).

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T61 laptop gets official

Posted in core 2 duo, Core2Duo, hsdpa, bluetooth, ibm (May 10, 2007 at 1:07 am)

Just in case the leaked specs weren’t solid enough for you, Lenovo has finally opened up and revealed the 14.1-inch T61 to the world. In what’s being dubbed the “strongest, coolest, and quietest ThinkPad ever,” the T61 comes sheathed in a magnesium alloy frame (Top Cover Roll Cage in Lenovo lingo), and touts an “improved cooling system, enhanced wireless connectivity with Ultra Connect II, and up to 15-percent longer battery life through its Battery Stretch control option.” Furthermore, you’ll find a WXGA+ display, a wide range of Intel’s Core 2 Duos, up to 160GB of 5400RPM HDD space (or 100GB at 7200RPM), NVIDIA’s 128MB Quadro NVS 140M graphics set, an optional Blu-ray drive, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g/n, and even an option for WWAN connectivity via EV-DO or HSDPA; additionally, there’s a four-in-one media card reader and your choice of Windows XP / Vista. It looks like the May timeframe we had heard about earlier will actually stay true in this case, and while you can price this bad boy as high as you can dream, the base machine will run you $1,399.

OQO Model 02 hacker crams in HSDPA early

Posted in hsdpa, hack, mod (May 8, 2007 at 1:06 am)

We knew adding HSDPA to the OQO Model 02 was roughly equivalent to swapping out a mini-PCI card, but instead of waiting on OQO to take its own sweet time in releasing such a version in the States, tnkgrl took it upon herself to hack one up. After soldering in a correctly sized Sierra Wireless AirCard, everything works dandy, and she took pics aplenty of the process, but you might want to wait on a tutorial or a bit of common sense before you rip into your own EV-DO-equipped model in a warranty-voiding effort to rid yourself of the shackles of EV-DO.

Globesurfer ICON USB HSDPA modem adds support for US networks

Posted in hsdpa (May 6, 2007 at 1:07 am)

Filed under:

Following up on its previous Globesurfer ICON, which was Europe- and Asia-only, Nova Media’s new Globesurfer ICON 7.2 Ready kit updates the included Option modem to the now-standard USB key form factor and, more importantly, adds a dash of that sweet 850 and 1900MHz UMTS action — making it usable on AT&T’s HSDPA network and T-Mobile EDGE in the States. Other than the hardware change, though, the package is basically the same: OS X and Windows software (OS X users get Nova’s launch2net utility with 300 preloaded network configurations), HSDPA / UMTS 3G / EDGE / GPRS support with download speeds up to 7.2Mbps on HSDPA (384Kbps up) and 220Kbps on EDGE (80Kbps up). Sadly, Nova says that speeds will be slower when connected to 850 and 1900MHz networks. Of course. Look to drop about €299 ($406) for the ICON Ready at the end of May.

Nokia N75 hands-on - part 2, launches the 4th

Posted in hsdpa, hands-on, nokia (May 4, 2007 at 1:06 am)

Hard to believe we had to wait until 2007, but here we are, finally able to say Symbian, 3G, and US all in the same sentence. Even after last week’s misfire launch of the N75, Nokia’s uber-hot flip phone made its way into our grubby hands under more legitimate circumstances than last time. Knowing how slim HTC made the Star Trek, it’s hard to call the N75 anything but a little chunky, but besides having, you know, 3G, it’s got a few other things going for it: we really dug the classy black, copper-flecked finish, but crack it open and it’s got a very spacious keypad and large bright screen (littered with Cingular app-swag). We took a ton of shots of this thing, including some size comparison’s to Nokia’s other Cingular handset, the E62, as well as the aforementioned Star Trek. Launch is thankfully still scheduled for sometime in May (i.e. this month) — we can almost taste it.

Update: We just got an official launch date! The N75 will go on sale tomorrow (Friday, May 4th) for the price of $200 (with two year agreement and with $50 mail in rebate).

Meet LG’s KS10: their S60 HSDPA slider with Google

We’re talking 2.4-inch LCD, 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and multimedia playback when this pup hits Italy in April and the rest of Europe and South East Asia before the year is up. Come to think of it, this is the same “Joy” S60 slider we saw back in October sporting a full xHTML browser and microSD expansion. Mmm, mmm… good cracker. iLiad e-book reader hacked for use with HSDPA modem

Posted in hsdpa ( at 1:08 am)

iRex’s iLiad e-book reader already boasts some built-in WiFi capabilities, but if that’s not enough to whet your wireless appetite you may want to take after MobileRead forum member “drazvan,” who managed to get the device to play nice with a Vodafone USB HSDPA modem. The whole process appears to be relatively straightforward, simply requiring you to run a few scripts on the iLiad, which drazvan has kindly provided. While he’s only tested it with the Vodafone modem, he seems confident that it’ll also work with other modems providing you make the necessary adjustments, which you’ll unfortunately have to figure out how to do yourself.

T-Mobile rivals Vodafone, offers up portable USB HSDPA modem

Posted in hsdpa, uk, england, wifi ( at 1:08 am)

There’s just nothing like good old fashioned competition, but it always gets interesting when the challenger rolls in with pretty much the exact same product. Interestingly enough, this seems to be the case with T-Mobile’s latest attempt to yank some 3G market share from Vodafone, which released its own oval-shaped HSDPA modem not too long ago. T-Mobile’s rendition may look the part, but the pricing is where it differentiates itself, as the firm will reportedly be offering the unit up for just £29.99 ($61) with a one-year contract, or free if you sign your name to an 18- or 24- month deal. Moreover, the monthly data charge for “unlimited” usage is the same as the one-year purchase price, which looks mighty tasty compared to Vodafone’s seemingly outrageous £53 ($106) monthly fee for the same privledge. The modem looks to be available on T-Mobile’s UK site right now, so if you were moments away from pulling Vodafone’s trigger, you can thank your lucky stars.

OQO confirms Model 02 delays, EV-DO modem to blame

Posted in hsdpa, umpc ( at 1:07 am)

While OQO has certainly had its share of ups and downs over the past few years — from us calling the Model 01 the “heavyweight champion of vaporware,” to literally having a market segment spring up around the devices — things looked to be headed decidedly up with the release of the 3G-capable Model 02 at the start of the year. But as always with the San Francisco company, the transition between announcing a product and actually shipping it is proving to be a little difficult. With shipping delays stretching to 16 weeks, an OQO rep recently confirmed the problem and pointed the finger of blame: “All orders with Sprint and Verizon customers are on hold while some issues are ironed out with the WWAN product line.” Engadget pal Boy Genius says his experience bears that out — his commercially-purchased Model 02 has no software support for the supposedly-present Sprint modem, and to make it worse, the unit he received is covered in nicks and scratches, more evidence of hiccups along the OQO production line. Although we enjoy talking to the guys over at OQO, it sounds like they really need to get their ducks in a row with the Model 02. Peep the full Boy Genius rant with photos of his nicked-up Model 02 at the read link.

Zepto’s Znote 6625WD does DX10, HSDPA, and HD DVD

Filed under:

Considering that Zepto isn’t exactly “the name” in full-blown gaming laptops, we certainly hope this one won’t turn out like ones prior, but the Znote 6625WD purportedly packs a plethora of lavish innards if it proves legitimate. The 15.4-inch machine is based around Intel’s Santa Rosa, er, Centrino Pro platform, and sports a WSXGA resolution, Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, NVIDIA’s 512MB GeForce Go 8600 graphics card, DirectX 10 support, an optional HD DVD writer, 802.11a/b/g/n, HSDPA compatibility, and to top things off, an HDMI output. The company will supposedly be taking customized orders in May to satisfy your wildest dreams, and while the bottom-end of the bunch could land at around “$1,100 to $1,200,” we imagine that some of the aforementioned luxuries will ratchet that right on up.

Nokia’s 6120 Classic: thin HSDPA is (finally) in

Great googlie mooglie, what’s this? Can it really be a 15-millimeter thin candybar from Nokia, the makers of those chunky multimedia computers? Ok, it’s not as thin as their N76 but let’s give ‘em some credit here for trying. Having fermented in the rumor mill for a few weeks, we now have ourselves a fully mature Nokia 6120 Classic running S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 over quad-band GSM and WCDMA/HSDPA 850/2100. The handset packs a 2-inch QVGA display, A2DP stereo Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, a 2 megapixel camera with flash, and MicroSD slot to store your media. A pre-tax, pre-contract price of €260/$352 will get you up close and personal when these hit sometime before June lets out. Check all the pics in the gallery below. Sorry, only a tiny backside pic for now; Nokia’s being a bit shy ’bout their junk.

Quanta and Dell collaborating on “Fly” smartphone?

Posted in hsdpa, rumor ( at 1:07 am)

While we aren’t exactly keen on the taste of salt trickling down our throats, we’re afraid a healthy dose is in order with this one. According to the always questionable DigiTimes, Quanta Computer is actually developing a “PDA handset” for Dell, and considering that it was but eight days ago that the firm’s Axim hit the graveyard, the timing here is doubtlessly intriguing. Of course, this isn’t the first time rampant rumors have swirled around a newfangled Dell handheld, but the outcome here could be a tad different than before considering the handset guru that just recently punched in. The project is reportedly operating under the codename “Fly,” and while no design specifics were handed out, it should sport Windows Mobile 6, HSDPA, and probably a QWERTY keyboard to boot. Whatever the case, at least this thing shouldn’t conflict with any Cisco trademarks if it all pans out.

Cowon Q5 PMP gets priced and dated

Anytime a US-bound PMP sports wireless connectivity we’re bound to sit up and take notice, so the fact that Cowon’s upcoming Q5 rocks not only Bluetooth and WiFi but HSDPA as well shoots this 40GB or 60GB model right up to the top of our wish list. Besides all that ‘net functionality (thanks to Windows CE Internet Explorer), the 5-inch Q5 sounds like a pretty strong performer as a standalone media device, offering an 800 x 480 resolution, DVR capabilities, hefty codec support (including DivX and XviD), built-in speakers, and an FM radio, along with optional TeleAtlas-based GPS. Definitely one that will give Archos a run for its money, and at $499 or $549 depending on capacity, there seem to be enough advantages over the similar Archos 604 WiFi to warrant the extra $50-$100 when this drops sometime by the end of this quarter.

Sony Ericsson took the wraps off a pair of new Walkman phones today, including the company’s first to boast that oft-desired HSDPA connectivity. Starting with the more familiar territory, the company’s W580 slider handset will give you quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity, along with a 2-inch QVGA display, 2 megapixel digital camera, an FM radio, and Bluetooth 2.0, among other Walkman-related features, all in 14 mm thick package. The Z750 clamshell phone, on the other hand, adds that aforementioned tri-band HSPDA action to the mix, along with a slightly larger 2.2-inch display, and the same 2 megapixel camera, FM radio, and Bluetooth 2.0. Look for it to roll out in the third quarter of this year as well, with “Phantom Grey” model also available for those that don’t dig the pink look.

iubi’s WiFi-enabled PMP-1480 does GPS / DMB on video

It’s not everyday that you can sneak a peek at the latest and greatest Korea has to offer on video, but PMPToday snagged a lengthy video of the iubi’s forthcoming PMP-1480 on camera, and we’re duly impressed. The “mock-up” on display looked mighty fine, and although it was a tad on the large side, it’s hard to cram a 4.3-inch WVGA (yeah, that’s 800 x 480) touchscreen into anything much smaller. The innards consist of a TMS320 DM6441 processor, 64MB of Flash ROM, 128MB of RAM, a 1.8-inch hard drive in the 30/40/60GB varieties, rechargeable battery pack, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, GPS, USB, and composite / S-Video / component video outputs to boot. Aside from the impressive hardware list, this Windows CE-powered device will also play nice with just about every format imaginable, including XviD, DivX, MPEG1/2/4, AVI, WMV, JPEG, BMP, and MP3, and the optional HSDPA dongle should keep users connected when hotspots are too far away . Sadly, we Americans aren’t likely to see this beauty (click on through for the vid) without going through the appropriate import channels, but Korean dwellers can look forward to throwing down a currently undisclosed amount in the May timeframe.

[Thanks, Voland]

Motion Computing’s Core 2 Duo-powered LE1700 Tablet PC

Filed under:

Thanks to GottaBeMobile, we’ve just learned of a pretty high end Tablet PC from Motion Computing called the LE1700, which features, among other goodies, a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 12.1-inch SXGA+ display. These specs alone would make the unannounced slate pretty exciting, but Motion’s also throwing in a fingerprint reader, built-in accelerometer, dual-mode digitizer, and three wireless radios: a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and hottest of all, HSDPA mobile broadband. We’d love to drop a price and release date on you too, but seeing how all this info is courtesy of the FCC, that just ain’t gonna be possible. Stay tuned, though — we’re sure this tablet will be popping up again.
