HP MediaSmart servers get priced?

Posted in pricing (August 21, 2007 at 4:50 am)

Not a lot to go on here, but it looks like a couple sites leaked tentative pricing information for HP’s first Windows Home Server machine, the MediaSmart Home Server. OnSale.com, PC Mall and Best Buy all listed the 1TB EX475 at $749, while the 500GB EX470 appears to be set at $599. Amazon also listed both models today sans pricing, so it looks like we’ll have these in our hot little hands soon.

Sony finally gets official with 80GB PS3 availability

Posted in pricing, ps3, sony, price, playstation 3, Playstation3 (August 7, 2007 at 2:21 am)

Filed under:

Hey, we can’t blame the folks at Sony for not wanting to write up the obvious on a Friday afternoon, but the firm has stormed back fresh today and doled out the official details regarding the pricing and availability of the 80GB PlayStation 3. As we all expected knew, the 80GB iteration is available en masse for $599 (or $659 CND for those to the north) and comes bundled with MotorStorm. It’s also noted that this higher-end edition joins the recently reduced 60GB model, and while Sony didn’t mention the deals you could get on any remaining 20GB units, they’re certainly out there.

Samsung resumes chip production, minifies losses

Posted in pricing, price, samsung (August 5, 2007 at 2:13 am)

Filed under:

Merely hours after Samsung was staring at “at least” $54 million in losses from an unexpected power outage at its Giheung complex, the firm is now reporting that the half dozen production lines are “fully operational.” Moreover, the outfit is now projecting losses to peak at around $43 million, which actually doesn’t sound too horrific compared to prior estimates. It was noted, however, that the disruption could extend a shortage of NAND flash memory through “at least the first half of August,” and reports are already claiming that prices of select NAND chips have risen “6.3-percent to a record $19.02.”

Meizu M8 gets unwelcome price hike, dodgy release details

Posted in pricing, price, launch, bluetooth, wifi (August 3, 2007 at 2:12 am)

Sure hope you weren’t counting on getting your palms around Meizu’s oh-so-familiar M8 anytime soon, as it now looks like the handset may not even be available to purchase until mid-next year. Granted, the 667MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM, GSM connectivity, 3.4-inch VGA touchscreen, video output, and built-in Bluetooth 2.0 / WiFi sure are appealing, but those still willing to wait this one out will apparently be paying even more than previously expected. The latest on the street pegs the forthcoming 8GB iteration at around $400, but if money ain’t a thang, you may as well continue on pinching those pennies for the 16GB (and potentially 3G-enabled) flavor.

UK retailers reveal Xbox 360 Elite pricing

Posted in microsoft, pricing, xbox 360 elite, Xbox360Elite, uk (July 20, 2007 at 1:08 am)

Filed under:

Retailers such as HMV, Play, and Game in the UK are gearing up for the August 24th European release of Redmond’s deluxe game system, and have begun pricing and taking pre-orders on Xbox 360 Elite packages at £330, although there’s been no official word from the company on pricing. Microsoft has been tight-lipped, but speculation is that sellers have been tipped off from other regions, as many of them have a European presence. Of course, Steve McGill, the UK mouthpiece for the Xbox, stated last week that the Elite vs. Premium package pricing would be similarly relative to their US counterparts, thus placing the Elite costs close to £336 — which certainly seems to solve this mystery.

RIAA demanding XM-Sirius pay higher royalty rates

Filed under:

In the unceasing feud between the RIAA and satellite radio, the agency has rekindled the fire by encouraging the FCC to “require the merged companies to pay higher royalty rates to the record industry.” Reportedly, the RIAA argued that the firms were “no longer new, struggling companies that could get away with paying below-market rates,” and further salted the wound by insisting that the FCC “make clear that its approval of a merger was conditioned upon the continued protection of sound recordings from unlawful infringement.” Of course, a number of senators have already voiced their concern for more limitations on satellite radio streams, but unsurprisingly, it seems like the RIAA wants these lofty wishes to become reality (and in a hurry).

PAL markets to see PS3 price drop on July 12th?

Filed under:

It’s practically a foregone conclusion that the price drops we North Americans saw on Sony’s PlayStation 3 would hit other markets eventually, but the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment in Australia may have revealed exactly when that drop is coming. According to a blurb at SmartHouse News, Michael Ephraim has apparently stated that a “PAL market announcement will be made on July 12th regarding price cuts to the PAL market PS3.” More specifically, consoles sold in Australia “could be cut by as much as 17-percent,” which would purportedly lower that model to AUD$829, and gamers in the UK could see the PS3 lowered to a much more respectable £350 if the percentage discount carries over. Only time will tell, eh?

Sony has “no plans” to cut PlayStation 3 price

Posted in pricing, ps3, sony, price, playstation 3, Playstation3, sales (July 7, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Filed under:

Wait a tick — if Sony has “no plans” to hack off a cool hundie from the price of its PlayStation 3, what mothership is directing Circuit City? In a brief blurb that can’t exactly be taken as the unequivocal truth, Sony President Ryoji Chubachi told Reuters that “at present, we have no plans” to lower the pricetag attached to its PS3 console. Of course, we mustn’t forget those contradicting reports showing that Sony actually has been mulling PS3 price cuts since the beginning of this year, and better yet, Sony’s been known to deny blatantly obvious price alterations a time or two before. So there you have it, a denial that reeks of non-denial, but even analysts are betting that Sony (officially) trims at least a Benjamin from the machine in the relatively near future.

Resolute Wal-Mart shopper attempts to self-checkout $5 plasma

Posted in pricing, price, crime (July 2, 2007 at 1:20 am)

While we’ve certainly seen more dramatic heists before, this particular run-in with the law melds cleverness and ignorance in perfect harmony. After conjuring up grandiose thoughts of subversion, a less-than-reasonable fellow managed to snag a 42-inch Sanyo plasma, replace the $984 pricetag with a slightly less burdensome $4.88 sticker, and carry it to the front where he utilized a self-checkout register to all but steal a brand new PDP. Presumably grinning from ear to ear just basking in the glory of his brilliance, we imagine the mood went south quite quickly after store officers approached the man and demanded a receipt. Of course, he attempted to sweet talk his way out of the predicament, but the end result landed him in handcuffs at the Ouachita Correctional Center. Can’t blame a guy for tryin’, eh?

Toshiba’s HD-A2 HD DVD player going for a mere $199

Posted in business, industry, pricing, price (June 12, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Now this is more like it. Sure, we’ve seen the prices of HD DVD players slowly but surely sinking over time, and while there’s been more than a few inconvenient rebate offers of late, it looks like a new precedent has been set. Crutchfield is now offering up Toshiba’s HD-A2 HD DVD player for a mere $199 after a $100 instant rebate, but we wouldn’t count on this thing showing up anytime soon. According to the site, not only is inventory sitting at zero, but it also admits that the ship date is unfortunately “uncertain.” Still, $199 for a second-generation HD DVD player ain’t too shabby (have you seen one for less?), so be sure to check out the previous impressions before grabbing your place in the ever-growing line of customers trying to take advantage.

[Thanks, Andrew]

UPDATE: Too bad — looks like Crutchfield was forced to jack the price up by a Benjamin or face an order backlog beyond belief.

Best Buy sued over shady intranet site

Posted in pricing, lawsuit, legal, sue, price, crime (May 26, 2007 at 1:10 am)

Filed under:

Tsk, tsk. Looks like Best Buy will indeed be paying up for the misdeeds involving that dodgy intranet we saw a few months back. Connecticut’s attorney general announced a lawsuit against the big box retailer and accused it of “deceiving customers with in-store computer kiosks and overcharging them.” Attorney General Richard Blumenthal was quoted as saying that the store “gave consumers the worst deal with a bait-and-switch-plus scheme luring consumers into stores with promised online discounts, only to charge higher in-store prices.” The suit seeks “refunds for consumers, civil penalties, court costs, a ban on the practice, and other remedies,” and while Best Buy spokespersons are vigorously denying the allegations, Connecticut’s consumer protection commissioner even said that there was “certainly an element of deception here.” Reportedly, the in-store kiosks were somehow an “alternate way to get information about products,” but when that information ends up costing your customers more than they should be paying, we doubt the judge will look kindly upon it.

Sony’s PSP price cut coming to Europe on May 4th

Posted in business, industry, pricing, sony, psp, europe, uk, britain, england (April 25, 2007 at 1:08 am)

C’mon, you did think that Sony whippersnapper that confirmed the US PSP price cut was holding back about Europe, didn’t you? As these things tend to fall, Europe is getting similar treatment as the US (albeit in a slightly later fashion), as the price of the PlayStation Portable will soon be descending to £130 / €170 (between $231 and $260) across the lake. Additionally, several Platinum titles will be taking a nosedive right along with it, as Ridge Racer 2, Tekken, Killzone, LocoRoco, and Moto GP all sink to £14.99 ($30). Hold your horses before skipping out of work and ripping our your credit card, though, as the price drops aren’t slated to take effect until May 4th — but we’d still recommend keeping a close eye out, as we know all too well how those street dates can fall through hold up.

PSP Core pack unsurprisingly falling to $169.99

Posted in News, business, industry, pricing, sony, psp (April 2, 2007 at 3:23 am)

Although the PSP Core pack isn’t dropping to the lows in which we had hoped it would, the stripped-down package is getting a slashing nonetheless as it attempts to attract buyers who still aren’t down with a $200 Value pack. Apparently, GameStop / EB Games locations have already received displays and instructions (posted after the jump) to lower the Core’s price down a few notches starting on April 3rd, which means that you should put your PSP shopping trip on hiatus until tomorrow rolls around. Of course, this leveling out of pricing doesn’t come to anyone’s surprise, but if you’ve managed to both hold off on a PSP until now and still have an urge to pick one up outside of the used market, Wednesday’s your day.

XM / Sirius to offer new pricing schemes after merger

Filed under:

We already know just how “priceless” the XM / Sirius merger will be, that your current radio will probably still function just fine, and that both firms are still facing legal heat in one way or another, but we hadn’t heard just how the newlyweds would handle the pricing of the new service — until now. In a decision sure to make a few people elated while giving a hint of suspicion to most others, the merged company will offer customers a package that includes “less channels” at a monthly price lower than $12.95, one that seems “substantially similar” for exactly $12.95, and finally, a third option that touts even more channels for “a modest premium.” We can only assume that the pricey third alternative will boast a nice mixture of both companies’ existing lineups, but unfortunately, it also leaves open the possibility that the cheaper two options might exemplify the “you only get what you pay for” tagline.
