Motorola day: Verizon gets Q9m, Sprint gets V9m

Posted in verizon, cellphone, phone, verizon wireless, VerizonWireless, vzw, sprint (August 22, 2007 at 4:24 am)

As expected, Verizon and Sprint have given Motorola a venue for its latest and greatest hardware today, releasing the Q9m Windows Mobile smartphone and RAZR 2 V9m flip respectively. Though the media centric Q9m’s $350 price on a two-year contract ain’t exactly pocket change, it’s interesting to note that it whittles right down to a more manageable $250 after rebate — a mere $20 more than you’ll pay for an old school Q Black. Meanwhile, minions from the other side of the CDMA camp (yes, we mean Sprint) have prepped the V9m for launch today at the same $250 price point after rebate, making it the first of several US carriers committed to a RAZR 2 launch to actually get it out of the door. If everything goes the way we expect it to, both of these devices will land on the other carrier in the next few weeks, so the “grass is greener on the other side” effect should be kept to a bare minimum here.

Faking one’s death still not enough to escape Verizon contract

Posted in verizon (August 21, 2007 at 4:50 am)

Filed under:

It’s no secret that some wily individuals will look high and low for loopholes to escape a wireless contract, but staging your own death in order to bypass a $175 early termination fee is admittedly extreme. Nevertheless, a frustrated and determined Verizon customer decided to do just that after the carrier refused to let him out of his contract. Insistent that a host of dropped calls and “string of defective cellphones” were reason enough to ditch The Network, he went so far as to “fashion a fake death certificate” and convinced a friend to fax it in. Unfortunately, Verizon caught on to the scheme and yet again refused to let Mr. Taylor out, so as you can probably guess, the perturbed ex-customer begrudgingly coughed up the dough, trashed his phone, and hoped that he “sent a definite message about how much people hate being strapped to a cellphone that doesn’t work.”

Verizon intros Sierra Wireless AirCard 595U EV-DO Rev A USB modem

BroadbandAccess customers, meet Sierra Wireless‘ AirCard 595U EV-DO Rev A USB modem, which is (almost) finally available to you through Verizon Wireless. Designed for use with your USB port, this EV-DO Rev A modem can also be connected through the included docking cradle, and even comes bundled with VZAccess Manager software. Additionally, the device boasts an internal, removable battery to “ensure there is always enough power support to handle peak or fringe area transmission requirements,” and should be available for those interested on August 30th for $179.99 — after you mail back a pesky rebate and sign your name to a two-year agreement, that is.

Verizon Wireless to buy Rural Cellular for $2.67 billion

Posted in merger, verizon, verizon wireless, VerizonWireless (July 31, 2007 at 2:19 am)

Filed under:

Another one bites the dust, so to speak. This time around, we’ve got Verizon Wireless doing the acquiring, as it has just announced plans to pay $2.67 billion for “one of the nation’s largest rural carriers,” Rural Cellular. The news comes just over a month after AT&T handed over a staggering amount of its own to pick up Dobson Communications, and this agreement will expand the carrier’s coverage “in parts of the East Coast and the South, as well as in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.” Verizon did note that it planned on deploying CDMA service in Rural Cellular’s existing GSM markets in order to convert customers over, but it also mentioned that the existing GSM networks would remain to “serve the roaming needs of other GSM carrier’s customers.” Look for the deal to be finalized sometime during the first half of next year, and don’t be surprised if we see a few more consolidation efforts go down in the meantime.

Corning develops bendable fiber optic cable

Posted in verizon, research (July 25, 2007 at 1:08 am)

Filed under:

Corning announced today that it has overcome a major roadblock in the proliferation of fiber optic lines around the world (or at least where Verizon wants to pay to put them in). For years, providers have been struggling against a deficiency in fiber optic cable which causes the pipe to vent light when bent or curved, or lose it entirely if twisted too far. Now, however, researchers at Corning have developed a new variant to keep data moving: tiny, nanostructure “guardrails” that surround the fiber’s core. The “rails” keep light from seeping out, yet are flexible enough to be wound around a pencil while delivering a signal at full strength. Corning hasn’t put the piping into production yet, but when it does, Verizon says it’s ready to use it — which means pretty soon we’re all going to be talking like that annoying kid from the FiOS commercials.

Verizon, LG intro new Chocolate

Posted in verizon, cellphone, lg, phone, verizon wireless, VerizonWireless, vzw (July 6, 2007 at 1:08 am)

We’ll spare you the “even sweeter the second time around” punnage that Verizon couldn’t help crack and get straight to the point here. Following up its hit VX8500 last year, Verizon has introduced a new Chocolate to its lineup, the aptly-named VX8550. The re-upped model gets very slightly trimmer by shaving a few hundredths of an inch off every dimension from its predecessor, a new keypad with touch feedback, and something LG is calling “Trace Motion” — some sort of lighting that works in conjunction with the new nav wheel. Carried over from the original Chocolate are the 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD slot, and wealth of music-related features, though sadly, the rumored 3.5mm jack ain’t here. Look for it in stores July 9 in your choice of “Black Cherry” and “Blue Mint.”

Verizon’s entire EV-DO network leaps to Rev. A

Posted in verizon (June 30, 2007 at 1:17 am)

In what’s likely yet another futile attempt to steal some limelight from that other national carrier today, Verizon has finally enhanced “100-percent” of its EV-DO network to Revision A technology. Of course, some locales have been enjoying the Rev. A niceties since February, but now Verizon users coast-to-coast (those under an EV-DO umbrella, that is) can stop feeling envious and start enjoying the higher speeds. Interestingly enough, this news comes just days after the company lowered its BroadbandAccess rates and merely hours after throngs of AT&T users reported their EDGE speeds skyrocketing for no apparent reason. Verizon subscribers in EV-DO areas can now expect average download speeds of nearly 600kbps to 1.4Mbps, while uploads will top out somewhere between 500kbps and 800kbps.

Verizon FIOS plans to add HD VOD

Posted in verizon (June 20, 2007 at 1:20 am)

Verizon FIOSFiber to the premises (FTTP), has the potential to deliver the most advanced HD services today, and although it isn’t available in most of the country, Verizon (and others) are bleeding money digging up neighborhoods all over the US to install the magical stuff. Just because you have fiber to your home doesn’t mean life is perfect though, there are still plenty of things that can get in the way of your viewing pleasure — like franchise agreements. Verizon recently announced that they were testing HD VOD in their labs and have an internal time line for launching the service — that they aren’t ready to share. But with their competition already offering this service in some areas they can’t wait forever.

DirecTV testing the broadband over power line waters

Posted in verizon (May 16, 2007 at 1:07 am)

Filed under:

While analysts have long questioned how satellite television providers would answer the challenge of cable companies offering up bundled services with such little hassle, both DirecTV and EchoStar have traditionally partnered with DSL providers to tempt users to the dish, but change may finally be on the way. Reportedly, DirecTV’s CEO recently suggested that it “may test delivering high-speed internet service through power lines in a major US city within the next year,” meaning that broadband over power lines could be comin’ down the pike. Notably, the company fessed up and stated that it “wasn’t the only one” in talks to get such a plan in action, and while prospective test areas weren’t named, the firm did say that it would probably aim for a “top 50 city where you’re covering at least half the city.” Of course, the talk of mergers was quickly shot down, but it’s hard to think that a partnership isn’t at least in the cards.

Vonage might have a patent workaround, not promising anything

Posted in verizon, vonage (May 12, 2007 at 1:07 am)

Filed under:

What’s that you say? A faint glimmer of hope on the horizon for Vonage? Surely you jest! But that unlikely-as-it-seems scenario appears to be just the case, with Vonage following up recent Q1 financial results of shrinking losses ($72.3 million, as opposed to $85.2 million last year) and growing sales ($195.9 million, up 64 percent) with news of a heretofore-thought-impossible technology solution to its patent woes. “We will begin rolling these workarounds out shortly, hopefully in the next few weeks, and we believe they will work,” says CEO Jeffrey Citron. Analysts point out that Vonage isn’t making any promises, and the company is far from out of the woods, but we’re guessing Vonage wouldn’t be bragging about something like this in the midst of appealing the Verizon patent suit if there wasn’t some truth to it. The update will apparently be low-cost, just involving software downloads.

Court gives Vonage perma-stay, ok to sign up new customers

Posted in lawsuit, verizon, vonage, patent (April 25, 2007 at 1:07 am)

This morning a judge for the US Court of Appeals handed Vonage the best news it’s heard in weeks: a permanent stay on the previous court’s decision that put a stop to new customer sign-ups during the appeal process of its ongoing patent lawsuit with Verizon. We ran through Vonage’s pity plea the other day, and while we’re not sure if its sad state of affairs or the potential shadiness of Verizon’s patents prompted the judge to give Vonage a new lease on life — Vonage calls it “business as usual” — we do know that Vonage isn’t out of the woods by any means.

Sprint rumored to be considering Vonage purchase

Posted in verizon, vonage, patents, sprint (April 18, 2007 at 1:07 am)

Filed under:

At the same time that embattled VoIP provider Vonage attempts to reorganize and cut costs during the company’s darkest hour, rumors are beginning to fly that an acquisition may be imminent, and at the top of the list of potential buyers is none other than Sprint-Nextel. You see, not only does Vonage need to litigate its way out of the Verizon mess, it’s facing yet another potential setback in September (if it even lasts that long) when an infringement lawsuit brought by Sprint is scheduled to begin. So even if Vonage manages to to fight off the impending permanent injunction, Sprint is waiting in line to take a bite as well, and now Light Reading is reporting that company execs may decide that the best way to settle this dispute is to simply sell Sprint the keys to the office. Now it’s pretty obvious why Vonage would want to cash out and dump its mess on another firm, but what does Sprint have to gain from such a deal? It’s not clear why the wireless carrier would want to get into the internet telephony game at this point, and even if it did, the court may soon rule that in effect, Vonage doesn’t even have anything worth selling — except maybe its customer list. Obviously we’ll be keeping our eye on this, because we have to admit, Vonage is a lot more fun to cover now than it used to be.

[Thanks, Travis]

Vonage: no workaround, we’re pretty much screwed

Posted in News, lawsuit, verizon, vonage (April 17, 2007 at 1:06 am)

Filed under:

Things just went from “really bad” to “oh man that sucks” for Vonage. The VoIP provider is requesting a permanent stay on Judge Claude Hilton’s decision in the Verizon patent suite, which decrees that Vonage can’t sign up any new customers until it figures out a way to provide them service that doesn’t infringe upon Verizon’s patents. Vonage had already been granted a temporary stay, saying that they’d drum up a workaround, but this new request is much more pessimistic, saying that because Verizon’s patents are so broad, such technology would take months to develop, “if even feasible.” The unlucky company is making a bit of a pity play as well, saying that even if it “was somehow able to implement a design around, and was able to ultimately prevail on appeal, it would have no hope of regaining its lost customers, or its lost goodwill, and its loss of revenue would be permanent and…” Oddly, the statement cuts out there, because the rest of it was redacted as “confidential material.” The whole Vonage statement is in fact riddled with such holes, making it hard to figure out exactly what’s going on — other than the fact that Vonage doesn’t like its chances of building a workaround. No mention of that VoIP Inc. safety net either, but perhaps Vonage still thinks it has a shot at doing this the old fashioned way.

Vonage shakeup: CEO resigns, cost-cutting announced

Posted in News, verizon, vonage (April 13, 2007 at 1:06 am)

Filed under:

In a series of events meant to stir things up at a company that many analysts have already written of as dead, Vonage CEO Michael Snyder has resigned on the same day that the pioneering VoIP provider announced a series of cost-cutting maneuvers, including operations consolidation, a reduction in marketing, and predictably, layoffs. Formerly president of ADT, Snyder led the company since February of last year, when he replaced founder and current Chairman of the Board Jeffrey Citron in that role — the same man who will once again hold the CEO title while replacements are scouted. The shakeup seems to have buoyed investors confidence somewhat following the courtroom setbacks in that Verizon patent suit, with Vonage shares up as much as 13 cents in premarket trading; however, it’s a rather hollow victory when you consider that the ~$3.00 stock went for as much as $17.88 this time last year. So while it’s good to see Vonage making some proactive moves in the face of what can only be considered a deathwatch, there’s only so much the company can do to affect its own fate, and at this point we could only be a ruling or two away from the end.

Judge: no new customers for Vonage

Posted in News, legal, injunction, verizon, vonage (April 9, 2007 at 1:10 am)

Filed under:

Ouch, this one’s gotta sting a little: after Verizon won an injunction against Vonage for copyright infringement, today US District Judge Claude Hilton has imposed an immediate stay on the VoIP provider’s business, disallowing them from adding new customers. Like, seriously, you they aren’t allowed to sign anyone up. Vonage will still continue providing service to those customers it currently has; it’s obviously planning to immediately appeal the decision, however Judge Hilton also managed to tack on a $66 million appeal bond, which doesn’t exactly sweeten their deal at all. Things are definitely not looking good for those guys; we’ll keep ya updated. [Warning: subscription req’d for link.]

Update: We just called Vonage, and their end-user sales reps haven’t gotten the memo yet. In other words, if you wanted to jump on Vonage service, today may be your last day to, at least for a while. (If you’re really lucky, you might be able to get a rep to rattle off their official memo on the Verizon case, which accuses them of “stifling their competition by using US courts.” Very good stuff.)

Update 2: The stranglehold decision made earlier today to stay Vonage and cut off its new customer signups has already been itself stayed, meaning the VoIP phone service provider can continue signing up new customers. (This news came this evening, well after our call into Vonage where a clueless rep hadn’t even yet gotten the memo to stop signing up new users.) The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals will consider Vonage’s appeal of the injunction and customer-signup stay set forth by Judge Hilton; looks like this one’s only going to get more messy, but thew takeaway is pretty straightforward: if you want to sign up for Vonage, you’ve still got a window of opportunity, so get in now before even more mad legal drama goes down.

Verizon rolling out G-PON technology to boost FiOS speeds

Posted in News, verizon (April 5, 2007 at 1:07 am)

In Verizon’s never-ending quest to continue bumping the bandwidth to the four or five lucky customers that actually have access to its FTTH network, the firm is planning to implement a new technology which will hopefully increase the speed of FiOS fiber-to-the-premises links “by four to eight times.” Of course we jest about the amount of you oh-so-fortunate ones that can actually get ahold of such speedy luxuries, but Verizon is looking to Alcatel-Lucent to help with the forthcoming gigabit passive optical network (G-PON), which is slated to “increase the aggregate broadband speeds on Verizon’s FTTP systems by four times downstream to the customer, and by eight times upstream back to the Internet.” The outfit also stated that it would “continue deploying the broadband passive optical network (B-PON)” that it has been using since 2004, and took a moment to boast about “how simple” upgrading FiOS actually was. Still, the vast majority of you won’t even be in the general vicinity necessary to acquire the newfangled G-PON niceties, but the soon-to-be-celebrating town of Lewisville, Texas can keep an eye on Q2 of this year, while folks in Kirklyn, Pennsylvania should have it sometime “over the summer.”

Verizon rolls out LG VX9400, second VCAST TV phone

Sure, Samsung’s u620 was the first on the scene when Verizon’s MediaFLO-based VCAST TV service launched earlier this month, but the fashionably late VX9400 from LG seems to be the real prize. At least that’s the impression we got when we had the opportunity to mess around with both side by side at CES in January, and starting today, Verizon customers can start buying and critiquing VX9400s of their very own (in VCAST TV markets, anyway). Your hard-earned $200 — plus the standard issue two-year agreement, of course — will net you the Chocolate-esqe handset with a swivel screen, 1.3 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, microSD expansion, and naturally, EV-DO data. We wouldn’t mind a few more teevee channels, but beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to the mobile TV landscape here in the US — and besides, it’s a pretty nifty lookin’ handset anyway, right?

Verizon wins permanent injunction against Vonage

Filed under:

Ruh roh, bad news for Vonage today. In one of the nearly ten million patent infringement suits that we’re closely following, a U.S. District judge has issued a permanent injunction against leading VoIP provider Vonage, barring the upstart telecom from using any technology protected by the three Verizon patents it has been convicted of infringing. In response to the ruling, company execs issued a statement attempting to reassure customers and reiterate its intent to appeal, although that didn’t stop panicked investors from pushing shares down 6.2% before trading was halted. Specifically, Vonage wants you to know that you “will not experience service interruptions or other changes as a result of this litigation,” claiming that it expects to prevail in an appeals process which starts in two weeks. If District Judge Claude Hilton decides at that time to make the injunction effective, Vonage can still plead its case in front of the Federal Court of Appeals — however, Hilton’s analysis of the injunction’s potential effects on both parties seems to squarely Verizon, which doesn’t bode well for Vonage even in a higher court. In other words, there’s no reason for Vonage users to start freaking out just yet, but if we were in your shoes, well, we might at least start window shopping for a new landline network.
