We know you’ve been dying to find out who’s taking home that super rare signed 300-Edition Xbox 360 Elite. Well, you can all officially bum rush Erik Burgardt, since he’s the lucky sucker taking this thing home.

Just for good measure, in addition to the signed Xbox and 300 HD DVD, Microsoft also hooked him up with a copy of Forza 2, Crackdown, a year’s Xbox Live service, and 1600 Microsoft points. Congrats Erik, everyone — including and especially us — is incredibly jealous.

Ohhh big surprise, Microsoft just announced a price drop on the 360 lineup. Retailers will knock $50 off the Premium systems (bringing it to $350), $30 off the Elite (down to $450), and $20 off the Core (bringing it to $280). Expect it to take effect this Wednesday, the 8th. Buy, buy, buy, people. Oh, let’s briefly review how many of Microsoft’s retail partners had a difficult time keeping Redmond’s big secret.

Win a super rare signed 300-Edition Xbox 360 Elite and 300 HD DVD!

Posted in xbox, xbox 360, Xbox360, xbox 360 elite, Xbox360Elite, contest (August 1, 2007 at 2:13 am)

We’ve given away any number of Xbox 360s on Engadget in the past, but never one with the level of awesome turned up to 11 (or, in this case, 300). Today we’re giving away one of just 20 super rare Xbox 360 Elite consoles printed with blood designs from 300 — but rarer still since it’s friggin’ signed by Frank Miller. The details of what the winner takes:

  • 300-Edition Xbox 360 Elite (120GB drive, wireless controller, etc.)
  • Console is signed by 300 creator and comic legend Frank Miller, as well as Zack Snyder, director of the eponymous film
  • 300 combo DVD / HD DVD (which is, incidentally, out today) to go right along with it.

Look, we’ll admit it, we really don’t want to give this thing away — so make sure you follow the contest guidelines, ok?

The rules (yeah, there are always rules):

  • Leave a comment below — tell us your fave scene from the movie. (It’s ok if you haven’t seen it, but where the hell have you been?)
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and if you submit more than once, only activate one comment, ok?
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment — otherwise we’ll send Leonidas after you.
  • Contest is open to anyone worldwide!
  • Entries can be submitted until 11:59pm EDT on Sunday, August 12th.

UK retailers reveal Xbox 360 Elite pricing

Posted in microsoft, pricing, xbox 360 elite, Xbox360Elite, uk (July 20, 2007 at 1:08 am)

Filed under:

Retailers such as HMV, Play, and Game in the UK are gearing up for the August 24th European release of Redmond’s deluxe game system, and have begun pricing and taking pre-orders on Xbox 360 Elite packages at £330, although there’s been no official word from the company on pricing. Microsoft has been tight-lipped, but speculation is that sellers have been tipped off from other regions, as many of them have a European presence. Of course, Steve McGill, the UK mouthpiece for the Xbox, stated last week that the Elite vs. Premium package pricing would be similarly relative to their US counterparts, thus placing the Elite costs close to £336 — which certainly seems to solve this mystery.

Microsoft shipping Xbox 360 Elite in Europe on August 24th

In addition to the Elite, Microsoft also shared the good news that Xbox Live types in Europe and Canada will be able to share in the video download goodies currently being enjoyed by their US counterparts, including but not limited to that hefty high-def Disney catalog that Microsoft is adding to the service tonight.

Xbox 360 Elite to hit Japan in October… for $390

Filed under:

While many Americans have simply been trying to find the ebony Xbox 360 in stock, Microsoft has been making plans to hold its breath and launch the special edition console in Japan. If you’ve noticed, Microsoft has had quite the time trying to convince the Japanese to actually give the standard Xbox 360 a shot, but apparently there’s hope that (yet another) flashy bundle will drum up business. Of course, the obvious standout here is the launch price, which will drop in at some $89 below what we Americans are forced to pay. Still, the ¥47,800 ($390) sticker shouldn’t take anyone by surprise, as Microsoft already introduced the Xbox 360 Core system to this same market for a lesser price than that seen in North America. Anywho, for those interested (and living in Japan), be sure to mark you calendars for October 11th, capiche?

VRX’s triple-screen racing simulator uses Xbox 360 Elite

Man, talk about leaving the Home Pro Racing Simulator in the proverbial dust. VRX has introduced a swank new racing sim of its own designed with a Forza Motorsports 2 theme and a trio of 37-inch Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD TVs. The frame is constructed from CNC machined polished aluminum, and envelopes the gamer by curiously including just one Sparco seat along with four Xbox 360 Elites, four copies of Forza Motorsport 2, an Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player, camera / wireless headset, a Zune, force feedback wheel, and surround sound as well. Sure, brush it off as overkill if you please, but those who are sick of draining quarters dollars at the arcade can contact the company to experience the presumed sticker shock for themselves.

Christmas comes early to 360 Elite owners: free HDD Transfer Kits for all

It looks like Microsoft has decided to return some of its record-breaking profits back to the consumer in the form of a free Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit for Elite owners — although some will look at this gesture as less of a gift (being that it could have just been included in the box with all Elites) and more of a hassle to get a one-time-use product that already comes bundled with the standalone 120GB drive. Interested parties can grab the necessary form by following the Read link, but you’ll need the serial numbers of both 360s to qualify, so if you were just looking for a free cable to tie up your pets or friends, you’re out of luck. Well, we’ve had a few hours with our Xbox 360 Elite wherein we’ve done nothing but test it against the most rigorous (unscientific) means at our disposal. But finally we are able to answer the question: is an HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 capable of outputting noticeably higher quality gameplay and movies? We compared our classic Xbox 360 (manufactured 12/08/2005) with our spankin’ new 360 Elite (manufactured 3/4/2007). Ready for the face-off? Check out the gallery, and read on for our conclusions.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which black high def console is the 1337est of them all? We know some people were bummed that the Xbox 360 didn’t get to compete in the 2006 Engadget Awards with the PS3 and Wii (hey, it was launched in 2005!), but now’s your chance to square off the two most expensive game consoles around. So who’s gonna take it, Sony’s piano black PlayStation 3, or Microsoft’s matte black Xbox 360 Elite?

Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit hands-on

Here’s that Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit that Microsoft so generously bundled with our Elite (don’t expect to get one with yours, it doesn’t come in the box). The documentation they sent with this thing was pretty substantial for an adapter and a CD you plug into your Xbox, but we think they want us to make sure we don’t screw anything up and lose all our precious, precious data. Here’s what you need to know (and some observations, to boot):

  • You don’t just transfer data to your 20GB drive externally — you have to plug your 20GB drive into your Elite, and use the 120GB drive externally. (Yeah, we photographed the unit attached to our 20GB drive though.)
  • You can only transfer content ONCE. This isn’t a backup or duplication tool, it’s one-time use per drive.
  • Even after turning off the console our externally adapted drive kept spinning because it was powered by USB. Weird.
  • Despite the on-screen diagram, our instructions say to use the BACK USB port. Woops, we didn’t. Pray it doesn’t kill our data.
  • Apparently Microsoft wants you to dispose of your transfer cable after use. Um, ok?
  • XBLA and Marketplace content (i.e. downloaded games and shows) require online authorization. In other words, some licenses can’t transfer, and you won’t necessarily be able to watch all your transferred media without logging on. Whatev.
  • Movie rentals cannot transfer drives. “Watch them first!” because they’re not going to make the trip, period. Double whatev.
  • If your 20GB drive is maxed out like ours, it could take a while. The system transfer will tell you how long it estimates the transfer to take: moving our 17.5GB of data was estimated at 1 hour and 20 minutes.
  • You can restart or stop the transfer at any time during the move, but you’ll have to start all over again next time. But you won’t lose any data. Supposedly.
  • “Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data resulting from the transfer process.” That’s the third and final whatev!

We’ll let you know the final time it took to transfer our drive’s contents.

P.S. -Our bestest buds at Joystiq got the same document and scanned it in for us, check it out in the gallery.

Update: All done! It took under an hour to move all 20GB over, not the hour+ the guide estimated. Best to keep expectations low, right? Still not super fast, but we’ll live. Stick close for more details about the device, pricing, availability. (Anything else you want to know? Ask it in comments while we’ve got Microsoft’s ear.)

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite gets unboxed and uncased

Filed under:

What once was special has apparently lost its exclusivity, as not only did Target completely ignore the April 29th street date set for the Xbox 360 Elite, but now we’re seeing that a Wally World in Minneapolis (among others) has followed suit. As these things always go, an avid gamer with a hand at photography has done the honors of unboxing and uncasing the new updated console, but we’ve got to give props for going the extra mile and offering up a comparison shot between the new and old motherboards. Additionally, he pointed out that a Hitachi GDR-3120L FK78 DVD drive and Fujitsu MHW2120BH 120GB HDD were the new weapons of choice, and while he couldn’t quite determine if Microsoft had snuck a 65-nanometer CPU core in there, we do know that Microsoft has updated the legacy compatibility list for the first time since December, giving you dozens of new titles to drown your sorrows in. Go ahead, indulge yourself.

Waiting around another week or so for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite to hit the market didn’t seem all that painful from here, but to those looking to get their sweaty palms around the sleek, HDMI-enabled rig on the double, you can apparently fulfill your fantasy right now. Unsurprisingly surfacing on none other than eBay, the world’s first Xbox 360 Elite bundle to leave Target’s doors in a customer’s hands has arrived, and if the small bevy of photos and actual receipt aren’t enough to arraign some careless bullseye-sporting employee, we don’t know what is. Of course, if you’re still unwilling to shell out the above-MSRP asking price, you can always patiently place a pre-order, enjoy the hands-on photos, and envision yourself in the place of those Microsoft drones playing with it on video.

HDMI specific Xbox 360 Elite details emerge

Filed under:

If you’ve been oooing and ahing at the Xbox 360 Elite’s HDMI connectionwhich really should have been there all along — then this is the post for you: a source at Microsoft has posted specific details of the Elite’s HDMI capabilities. Apparently the Elite will only support the 1.2 HDMI standard, and not the 1.3 spec which would have enabled TrueHD or Dolby Digital+. As such, you’ll have to stick with regular DD, DTS, and WMA-Pro for your sound output. It also only supports dual channel PCM output, not full 5.1 channel, and if you want full 5.1 PCM output the tipster cheekily recommends “purchasing the Toshiba A2 player” which is much cheaper than the $479 Elite. At this point the complexity of the tech talk takes a step up, as amirm refers to a fall update that will bring support for “different video levels for VGA output” which could potentially improve fidelity and HDCP handshaking support on displays operating at 1080p. We suspect that around half of the people that started reading this left to read our interview with fake SJ somewhere around the point that we mentioned “dual channel PCM output”, but what do the three people left reading think about these HDMI deets?

Keep in mind this is Microsoft’s Channel 10 doing the shooting, so everything is well lit and the questions are as boring as all get out, but it’s the best we’ve got — and be sure, we’d be pushing you some grainy QVGA camphone video of the Xbox 360 Elite if we had it. The interview is with Albert Penello, who is quick to get a dig in on Sony for leaving out an HDMI cable. Albert again confirms that a migration cable will be packaged with the stand-alone 120GB drive, but says they’re “still working on a solution” for migrating data from a current Xbox 360 to the Elite, since apparently data is tied to the console in some way… such is the way of DRM, always putting the consumer first!

Xbox 360 Elite and 120GB drive now official

HD nerds and Xbox fanboys, the moment you’ve been waiting for: the Xbox 360 Elite we alerted you about way back when it was just called the Zephyr has finally been announced. As we previously mentioned, it will be black, it will have HDMI, and it will have a 120GB drive (it’ll also come bundled with a one month Xbox Live trial) for $479. Unfortunately, also as mentioned before, it’s not going to have the new 65nm CPUs, it still doesn’t have integrated WiFi (Xbox said it’s because a study showed the majority of their customers use Ethernet to connect — huh?), and it won’t have an integrated HD DVD drive (not that we expected otherwise). Microsoft did make some marketing decisions since our sources spilled the beans on this thing though: it’s not going to be limited edition, as we previously had. Instead, the Elite will be a permanent SKU, the third and top-tier Xbox device. On the solo 120GB drive side of things, that unit will cost $179, and will come with a cable and software to migrate from your old 20GB drive. (MSFT wasn’t yet sure if that kit would be sold separately for new Elite users — sounds like it will be though, and will be priced very reasonably.) More info:

  • The console will come with component and composite cables, as well as an HDMI cable. (Take that, Sony and Apple!)
  • The console will come with a black wireless controller and black (wired) headset.
  • Sorry, the new black controller still doesn’t have backlit buttons — don’t let the pic fool you.
  • The black controller, black rechargeable batteries, black headset, and black Play & Charge kit will all be available in retail for the same price as the white gear.
  • The HD DVD drive will not be released in black.
  • Xbox didn’t know what HDMI version the Elite uses, nor whether it supports PCM 5.1, TrueHD, etc.; it will obviously support 1080p, though.
  • Sorry, no price cuts on the Premium or Core packs.
  • Xbox Live Marketplace will also begin vending content from New Line, Paramount, and Universal (and their properties).

It’s out April 29th, people. Ready for your second Xbox? No? Well, it’s still cheaper than that other black game console.

We’re not sure how “Wangsososos” got the shots, and we sure hope his machine-translated statement doesn’t mean what we fear it might: “As mobile phones, cameras can not be brought into plants. The key to reaching the buttocks no plans, joy!” But we digress. For some up close and personal pics of that 120GB drive, peep the gallery.

Xbox 360 sends HDD data to 360 Elite via transfer cable?

If you’ve been wondering how you’ll get that stash of game demo downloads, HD movies and ripped music from your clunky ol’ white 360 over to the Elite’s 120GB drive, the rumor mill has the answer: a cable. Crazy, we know. The word of an Ars Technica tipster is that Microsoft will be including some sort of transfer cable with its Elite units and standalone 120GB drives, so it should be no problem to scoot the data over no matter which one you buy. After all, you didn’t think Microsoft would pass up a chance to get that 2nd Xbox dollar from its most loyal of followers, did you?
