Microsoft shipping Xbox 360 Elite in Europe on August 24th

Filed under:

We’re still a little curious at the hold up, but Microsoft has finally announced that the Xbox 360 Elite is going to hit Europe on August 24th. In addition to the Elite, Microsoft also shared the good news that Xbox Live types in Europe and Canada will be able to share in the video download goodies currently being enjoyed by their US counterparts, including but not limited to that hefty high-def Disney catalog that Microsoft is adding to the service tonight.

Hacked Xbox 360 firmware prevents banning

In today’s episode of tit-for-tat, hackers have blocked Microsoft’s attempt to ban their modified consoles. Just two weeks ago remember, Microsoft began checking and then banning Xbox 360 consoles from Xbox Live if the Big M found the gear to be modified in violation of the Terms of Use. However, new firmware — a tat if you will — was just released by the lively (to say the least) modding community makes hacked Xbox 360s invisible to Microsoft’s snooping; if they can’t see it, they can’t ban it. Now come on Microsoft, show us your tit. Erm.

Microsoft banning hacked consoles, users from Xbox Live

Console hackers: beware! Microsoft has officially taken the hard line on hacked consoles connecting to Xbox Live. According to the Xbox’s Gamerscore blog, henceforth when a modded console is detected on the Live network, users can expect to have their account auto-banned, and their console permanently disabled from the system. Damn. (We just hope that doesn‘t affect the kinder, gentler type of Xbox modding.) Granted, we can’t really fault Xbox for trying to keep cheating between gamers on the level, but anything that so actively deincentivizes people from toying around with their own hardware is a serious bummer.

Red Octane looses Guitar Hero II patch for Xbox 360

We’re not quite ready to consider this a coincidence, but the hard-working souls over at Red Octane have officially unleashed a patch for the malfunctioning Guitar Hero II axes just in time for the weekend. Recently, it was claimed that axes sporting 95065 and 95055 model numbers could lose responsiveness in the whammy bar, but thanks to Xbox Live, users can download the patch and get back to unadulterated rockin’ right away. So what are you waiting for? Finish up those finger exercises, fire up your console, and let us know if in fact the downloadable solution mends the problem.

Video walkthrough of Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard update

Filed under:

You know how it goes: pictures are fabulous, but videos are probably the next best thing to handling it yourself. In this case, a video walkthrough is about as close as you’re going to get to May 7th whilst still chillin’ in April, and considering you already know just about everything you can ever desire about the impending update and QWERTY thumboard, why not relearn it all again care of an “official” on-screen walkthrough? You know you can’t resist, so be sure to hit the read link and pull up a chair, because you’re going to get tired of standing after 25 or so minutes.

[Thanks, Buck]

Xbox 360 Elite and 120GB drive now official

HD nerds and Xbox fanboys, the moment you’ve been waiting for: the Xbox 360 Elite we alerted you about way back when it was just called the Zephyr has finally been announced. As we previously mentioned, it will be black, it will have HDMI, and it will have a 120GB drive (it’ll also come bundled with a one month Xbox Live trial) for $479. Unfortunately, also as mentioned before, it’s not going to have the new 65nm CPUs, it still doesn’t have integrated WiFi (Xbox said it’s because a study showed the majority of their customers use Ethernet to connect — huh?), and it won’t have an integrated HD DVD drive (not that we expected otherwise). Microsoft did make some marketing decisions since our sources spilled the beans on this thing though: it’s not going to be limited edition, as we previously had. Instead, the Elite will be a permanent SKU, the third and top-tier Xbox device. On the solo 120GB drive side of things, that unit will cost $179, and will come with a cable and software to migrate from your old 20GB drive. (MSFT wasn’t yet sure if that kit would be sold separately for new Elite users — sounds like it will be though, and will be priced very reasonably.) More info:

  • The console will come with component and composite cables, as well as an HDMI cable. (Take that, Sony and Apple!)
  • The console will come with a black wireless controller and black (wired) headset.
  • Sorry, the new black controller still doesn’t have backlit buttons — don’t let the pic fool you.
  • The black controller, black rechargeable batteries, black headset, and black Play & Charge kit will all be available in retail for the same price as the white gear.
  • The HD DVD drive will not be released in black.
  • Xbox didn’t know what HDMI version the Elite uses, nor whether it supports PCM 5.1, TrueHD, etc.; it will obviously support 1080p, though.
  • Sorry, no price cuts on the Premium or Core packs.
  • Xbox Live Marketplace will also begin vending content from New Line, Paramount, and Universal (and their properties).

It’s out April 29th, people. Ready for your second Xbox? No? Well, it’s still cheaper than that other black game console.

Microsoft admits uptick in Live account hacking, writes it off to social engineering

Filed under:

Everyone enjoys a good Xbox hack, but they’re not so fun when the tables are turned and it’s your Live account that’s been commandeered by crooks — who are supposedly draining your credit card while you’re stuck on the sidelines with a duplicate, unusable Gamertag. While it’s not surprising that hackers would hijack online accounts to snatch valuable personal info, the question being raised in forums and now in the media is how Microsoft has been dealing / plans to deal with these breaches. The company first admitted that “there have [recently] been reports of fraudulent activity and account theft taking place” on Live when contacted by CNET, and went on to say that it is “actively investigating all reports of fraudulent behavior and theft.” However, Major Nelson is now reporting that Redmond has found “no evidence of any compromise of the security of the Xbox Live Network or Bungie.net,” and is attributing all of the recent incidents to “malicious users…attempting to draw personal information from unsuspecting users.” It’s hard to imagine that the uptick in fraud revealed to CNET is due solely to an increase in gullible gamers, but unless Microsoft plans on tightening security, all you can really do is continue to exercise the usual precautions or cancel your account and get your MMO fix from Yahoo! Bingo.
